Daytona Beach, Florida: A Racing Beach

Daytona Beach is a preferred travel destination due to its strategic location. The beach is situated on the Central East Coast of Florida and it is near other popular tourist attractions, especially the theme parks. It also lies some 54 miles from Orlando which is another favorite tourist destination. The beach is easily accessible via the Interstate 4 and Interstate 95 highways. The beach is also served by the Daytona Beach International Airport that serves commercial Airlines.

The average day time temperatures on the Beach are 21 deg. C, regardless of whether it is winter or summer. When winter temperatures try to cool down, the warm breeze from the ocean counters this, thereby restoring the things back to the average 21deg. C. As such, one will realize that at times the inland temperatures might be cooler than the coastline temperature. On some rare occasions, the Hurricane might reverse its course and cause some nasty weather conditions on the beach, and the probability of this happening is between August and December. The beach usually floods with visitors as from June all the way through August, when schools are on holidays.

The Daytona Beach is a favorite travel option due to many reasons. It has easy access that enables even automobiles to dock on it. This is due to its slope that is gentle and made of tightly packed white sand. It has enough space, stretching for approximately 23 miles with a maximum width of 500 feet during the low tide. However, driving and parking are limited by the tide’s behavior and sand dunes which can at times reach a height of 25 feet.

One of the common activities in Daytona Beach is automobile racing. It is an old practice that dates back to the early 20th century. History was made on the beach on March 29th 1927 by Major Henry Segrave who was an Englishman, when he surpassed the 200 miles per hour speed limit in his Sunbeam car, “Mystery S.” The International Speedway was completed in the year 1959, giving way for the first Daytona 500. The race took place on February 22nd that same year. Since then, the racing heritage on the beach has evolved up to what it has today. The race usually attracts more than 150,000 fans and it is normally broadcasted on CBS. There are also other racing tracks nearby, and these are the New Smyrna Speedway located in the New Smyrna Beach as well the Volusia County Speedway which is found in Barberville. These two tracks spring to life with action on each and every Saturday night.

Other attractions in the Daytona area include the Pounce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse Museum, the Adventure Lauding, which is a water park cum an entertainment center, and the DAYTONA USA, which is a motorsport attraction designed for interaction.
